Understanding what is at stake

Julien approaches the novel through Djamil’s telling to Nadji and the question of guilt that accompanies it. He recognises the importance of speaking about lives exposed to taboo, censorship and violence. The narrator’s uncertainty over how to name his account sets the terms of that difficult story. The reviewer then makes a distinction between recognising the book’s significance and being absorbed by its reading. He describes taking substantially longer than usual to finish and not feeling a strong pull to return after closing a chapter. Source 1

A reservation kept open

Julien does not confidently assign that distance to either the author’s style or the French translation. His uncertainty is part of the response and remains unresolved here. The signed 2025 literary-blog review adds a mixed reading experience to the collection rather than a promotional endorsement. Source 1
