Reading orientation

The bangles are given early, making a birthday’s anticipated happiness present before the day itself. Hasti wants her friend Niko to see them; the adults must coordinate visits, prayer and the children’s play. These small arrangements give the family voices their specific texture. Source 2

The numbered sections change the remembered speaker. A grandmother’s concern about the gift is followed by a father’s conversation and the child’s affectionate farewell. The shift invites attention to what each relative recalls, without turning the literary telling into an independently verified reconstruction of the surrounding news. Source 2

Publication and language

The Persian page is dated 18 December 2022 and explicitly presents the piece as told by Rabihavi. The portrait caption names Hasti, not a co-author. This English orientation preserves the distinction between the family voices represented in the text and the publication’s contextual claims. Source 1

The bangle Niko keeps

The third section belongs to Niko, Hasti’s older friend. They play beside a fountain, laughing at its cold spray while remaining conscious of armed patrols. Hasti gives her one of the birthday bangles, leaving five on her own wrists. Niko gives Hasti a doll dressed in clothes sewn by her mother. The exchange makes their friendship tangible before the story turns towards loss. Source 3

Holding up the doll, Hasti whispers Woman, Life, Freedom. A shot interrupts the play. The bangles and doll are wet as Saman tries to bring her round with water. Niko’s final promise is to keep her bangle for her friend. The object introduced as a birthday gift becomes the means by which a surviving child carries the memory forward. Source 3
