Reading orientation
The family’s journey across the salt plain is measured by thirst and what they can carry. Behind them is a burning city; their conversation keeps returning to the son who stayed. The present movement cannot separate itself from the people and places left behind. Source 2
The parents do not give the absent son the same meaning. Their disagreement places the language of duty alongside a mother’s fear and the demands of keeping the remaining family moving. Read the landscape through these competing voices, rather than as a neutral backdrop to an evacuation. Source 2

What Bibi cannot leave
The family’s departure leaves Bibi behind with two cows, a jasmine plant and the winter cloth she is weaving. She asks who will feed the animals and water the plant if rain does not come. The narrator promises to return, although the urgency of escape has left little room to consider what that promise requires. Source 3
Water runs out as the village comes into view. Aircraft make the family afraid of attacks from either side. When the older brother says their side will win, a younger child asks which side they belong to. The final question gives no secure political position to the people whose immediate task is to survive the crossing. Source 3
