Reading orientation

Returning from a few hours’ leave, the narrator climbs into a pickup carrying Khosrow’s body. Rain enters through the tarpaulin as his companions offer hesitant and conflicting answers about who he was and how he died. At a checkpoint, an inspecting soldier finds bullet wounds where the document records shrapnel. Source 1

The companions’ conversation indicates that Khosrow was killed by his own side after fighting without the required permission. Their grief also has an exhausting practical form: papers, inspection and a vehicle that will not start. The narrator eventually leaves in another truck; his last view is of Razzaq still standing beside the body’s stranded vehicle in the rain. Source 1
