A reader’s path through the arts

Laurent Garreau opens his postface with cinema as his route into Iranian poetry and contemporary prose. Films, literary adaptations and the Nouvelles Images Persanes festival provide occasions for that encounter. His account accompanies Nasim Vahabi and Julie Duvigneau’s panorama of Iranian literature published in France. Source 1

Rabihavi in a history of constraint

On PDF page 5, Garreau names Le sourire de Mariam and Les garçons de l’amour while placing Rabihavi beside the literary legacy of Sadegh Hedayat. He reads Hedayat’s representation of confined independent thinkers in Three Drops of Blood against the later imprisonment of writers such as Rabihavi in Evin. The comparison belongs to Garreau’s critical argument about state violence and writing as testimony; it is not a new first-person recollection by Rabihavi. Source 1

The postface broadens into the choices writers face under censorship, the uncertain promise of exile and the encounters made possible by translators and French readers. It also considers the difficulty of separating lived experience from imagined narrative. These are Garreau’s wider claims about a literary tradition, rather than evidence that every fictional character represents its author. Source 1
