The work

Original language: Persian

Rabihavi describes a novel unfolding from morning to night in a Tehran shelter for people displaced by war. The French publisher presents four alternating monologues following Ozra, Issah and Mariam. The edition ledger keeps the revised Persian books beside the French translation, without treating the fictional family as the author’s biography.

Mariam in print and on an electronic page.

Le Sourire de Mariam has a separately identified EPUB 3 publication, 9791097594756, alongside the print book 9791097594749. Kobo’s explicit French field and 19 August 2022 release date belong to the electronic record.

The print publisher names Christophe Balaÿ’s translation from Persian. The electronic listing supplies no new translator or revision statement, so its format is recorded without inventing a second translation.

Maryam · revision and translation

Returning to an earlier novel.

In Baang’s May 2021 account, Rabihavi describes revisiting a novel written about thirty years earlier. He connects the rewriting to passages shaped by self-censorship and explains that the new edition let him return to what he had wanted to write.

That account accompanies the Goethe & Hafis Persian publication. Its German parallel title, Das Lächeln von Maryam, does not establish a German translation. Christophe Balaÿ’s French Le Sourire de Mariam has its own publisher, translation credit and August 2022 date.

Goethe & Hafis · 2020 / 2021

The library record preserves both years.

Harvard dates the Persian Goethe & Hafis edition to 2020. The fuller German National Library record gives a 2021 imprint and adds an explicit note that 2020 is an alternative publication date. Both records identify ISBN 9783940762870.

The additional catalogue note explains where the two years are retained. It does not prove two separate printings or select one physical-imprint date. The rewritten book’s publication context remains distinct from its later French translation.

Pendaar · Persian

Another publisher appearance.

Pendaar’s catalogue lists Maryam’s Smile under Rabihavi’s name. It gives no publication year, ISBN or edition number in the checked entry.

The listing adds a publisher appearance to the novel’s history. It does not establish whether the volume contains the earlier text or the rewritten version discussed in 2021.

Library catalogue · Persian revised edition, Goethe & Hafis, Bonn, ISBN 9783940762870. Harvard records 2020; DNB records 2021 for the same ISBN. Pagination and parallel title do not resolve the year difference.

  5. Maryam rewritten · Baang

Editorial profile · Published 14 May 2021. Describes a rewritten Goethe & Hafis edition and carries the author’s discussion of earlier self-censorship; this publishing context does not settle Harvard’s 2020 catalogue year.

  6. Maryam’s Smile · Naakojaa

Publisher · The publisher’s record names Rabihavi, Naakojaa, Persian literature, paperback and publication year 1403. It prints no ISBN or more precise publication date. Retained capture: 14 September 2026.

Library catalogue · The retained original MODS and JSON responses contain real edition fields: Afsane’s Persian Maryam, Gardoun and Pendaar Boys, and the 2023 Persian Four Seasons. 9. Maryam’s Smile · Princeton Library · Afsane edition

Library catalogue · Afsane, Uppsala, ISBN 9789197292603, dated 1996. Libris dates the same ISBN 1997. The year difference is retained as an unresolved catalogue conflict.

Library catalogue · Persian title with an English parallel title, [U.K.], Mardumak, 2011, ISBN 9781780830315. The parallel title and English novel label do not establish an English translation.

  11. Maryam’s Smile · Open Library · Mardumak edition

Library catalogue · The returned record explicitly identifies a Persian novel, Mardumak, [U.K.], 2011, ISBN 9781780830315 and a second-edition label. Its imported MARC sources include the Library of Congress, Columbia and Harvard; the parallel English title does not change the recorded language.

  12. Maryam’s Smile · full German National Library record

Library catalogue · Exact MARC record 1229110909 identifies a Persian first-edition-labelled book, Goethe & Hafis, Bonn, 2021, ISBN 9783940762870. Its note explicitly preserves 2020 as an alternative publication date. This fuller record explains the catalogue difference without proving two printings or selecting a single physical-imprint date.

  13. Four Persian books · Pendaar publisher catalogue

Publisher · The publisher lists Persian-language books by Rabihavi: Gisu, Maryam’s Smile, A Ballad of Love and Iranian Four Seasons. It explicitly describes the latter two as story collections. No publication year, edition number or ISBN accompanies these four listings, so none is inferred. Its Boys of Love listing is not counted as an additional printing.
