Reading orientation

Fourteen-year-old Naji leaves his village to find Hassun, the brother called to the front. Their grandmother wants to see him before she dies. The journey takes the boy beyond his familiar river and buffaloes, through Abadan’s emptied streets and the black smoke of burning oil tanks. His limited Persian makes encounters with strangers difficult; a young volunteer, Yusuf, becomes his guide. Source 1

Unable to take Naji into the fighting, Yusuf arranges a reassuring account that a friend will deliver the grandmother’s message. Naji imagines returning with a kinder story than the uncertainty he has found. At home, however, he learns that a bombardment has killed his family. The narrative brings a child’s wish to protect others from fear into contact with a loss no reassuring story can repair. Its final movement follows him away along the river. Source 1
