Reading orientation

The children’s questions give this story its disturbing angle of vision. They notice the photographer’s cameras and the practical work of assembling the gallows before grasping the adult violence being organised around them. The white stone is first an ordinary object and then a support for that procedure. Source 2

Watch the contrast between the children’s curiosity and the officials’ purposeful movements. Photography makes looking an activity within the scene, rather than merely the reader’s position outside it. The story can be approached through the distance between witnessing an event and understanding what one is watching. Source 2

Publication and language

Avaye Tabeid 29 carries the Persian story in Autumn 1401 / 2022. An earlier BaghDarBagh post is dated 8 April 2007. Their closing datelines differ, so neither is used here to settle an original composition date or the textual history of the translated appearances. Source 1 · Source 3 · Source 4

A rehearsal that becomes the execution

The officers call the preparations a test because the senior visitor has not yet arrived. A white stone takes the place of a stool. While the prisoner waits blindfolded above it, the officers and photographer eat dates under shelter from the snow. The procedure’s claim to order sits beside the precarious support beneath his feet. Source 5

One child stops an adult spectator from approaching. The stone eventually falls as the prisoner shifts his weight, and the hanging happens before the awaited visitor arrives. The children then warm their hands at the hearse’s lights, copying the photographer. Their ordinary need for warmth closes the scene in the same field of attention as the death they have watched.
