The war remains in the room

Haffari reads The Wound as a story about war without the battlefield at its centre. Years after displacement, the family still measures its surroundings against the place it lost. Heat, unemployment, gossip and a cramped room sustain the pressures that military violence has left behind. Source 1

Her account attends to the story’s sensory construction, including sound and smell as well as images. The daughter carries the household economically while the father asks the younger son to watch her. The conflict makes material dependence and customary authority visible within the same domestic scene. Source 1

Objects and later readers

A trunk and a sugar-breaking tool become important to her reading. She interprets the first through security and the second through the father’s anger. The intended injury is interrupted, keeping the story from becoming a simple confirmation that cruelty must prevail. Source 1

The article also includes separately attributed remarks by Rabihavi about a later reader’s comparison of the trunk to a coffin. Those remarks illuminate an object’s changing meanings without replacing Haffari’s interpretation. The visible 7 June date and 5 June publication metadata remain distinct source labels. Source 1
